Yeah, yeah, okay, I admit it. I have only just gotten round to playing Bayonetta. Why? I hear you ask (I didn't, but let's pretend I did). Well, that's an interesting question, thank you for asking. There are some games in a life of a console which just get ignored, usually by individuals like myself or more rarely, by large groups of gamers who just watch a classic go flying by until they all collectively realise what a mistake they had made. ie Shadows of the Damned.
Shadows of the Damned is a game you have never heard of, possibly, but you should take it upon yourself to go explore beyond the first person shooter and sample this wonderful yet utterly crazy videogame from Grasshopper Manufacture comprising of some of the iluminaries of the videogame industry. Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, Suda 51, the brains behind Killer7 and No More Heroes and last but not least is Akira Yamaoka, the wonderful chap behind the music in the Silent Hill series.
Now, if this doesn't appeal to you in the slightest, then please flick to the next page as the next paragraph will probably not warrant your attention but if anyone of those previous names of both people and videogames perked your eyebrows up then you need to read on. Shadows of the Damned plays similarly to Resident Evil 4 and of course 5 but with the added flavour of being able to move and shoot at the same time.
You play the role of Garcia F**king Hotspur, a guy who volountarily jumps into hell after his girlfriend Paula is kidnapped, murdered, brought back to life and murdered repeatedly by the wicked devil named Fleming. This isn't where the crazy stops, by the way. Alongside Garcia is an all round everyday floating, flaming skull named Johnson who has the ability to turn into a variety of weapons and course, a motorbike.
Along the ride you'll bump into things that probably wouldn't make a whole lot of sense out of context of the game and even then, you'll still be hard pushed to believe your eyes. The game really is that bonkers and that isn't a word I use often to describe many things, let along a third person shooter for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
It's out now and has sold pretty poorly but go out there and just rent it. You'll love it, I'm sure!
