The sun is shining, glaring into your eyes, you are on top of the world looking down on your fellow man basking in the glory of the sunset enjoying a drink and having a quick game of cards which promptly breaks out into a fight. I am not talking about my experience with the summer sun but Red Dead Redemption, a game I will always associate with gaming in the summer.
It might strike some people as odd to play videogames when the sun is blazing and for the most part you may be right but video gaming in the summer has never been more acceptable and indeed viable for both us the games player and the videogames publisher.
If we look at gaming in the summer from the viewpoint of dedicated gamers what can we learn from them? Gaming in the summer for me usually involves something which is easily played without too much time constraint and while games like Red Dead Redemption and now L.A Noire disprove my theory we also have the release of Dirt 3 a game which I am most certainly dipping in and out of whenever I have the spare hour or two in the evening.
Not only does it reduce the strain of my wallet over the course of the year instead of stockpiling games at the end to hit the Christmas rush but it also allows developers such as Codemasters to sell me a game like Dirt 3 now rather than not at all if they were to release it in the winter, battling for precious shelf space both in-store and in my collection at home.
Devices such as the iPad, 3DS and PSP all certainly have their place in the sun even if the screen glare is a little bit too much to handle in direct sunlight. Everyone reading this must of had a Gameboy, DS or PSP on holiday by the pool finishing off your game of Tetris, battling your enemies in Pokémon or jumping on a turtle shell in an effort the save the fabled princess in the Mushroom Kingdom.
I’m not saying you should immediately lock yourself away every summer but remember folks, gaming is for life, not just for Christmas.
